Civil Rights Art & Poetry Contest

The Sacramento Regional Transit District is celebrating its 6th Annual Season of Civil Rights with a series of events during the months of December, January & February to build awareness about the significant role that transit played in the American Civil Rights Movement.

RT invites students in grades 3 through 12, who attend a school within RT's service area, to participate in the "I Am the Dream and the Dream Is Now" art and poetry contest.

The contest allows students to creatively express their ideas about the relationship between transit and civil rights. Original artwork must be submitted on 8.5" tall x 11" wide (landscape) paper. Poems must be 10 lines or less and be original work and type written. All entries are required to relate to the both the theme of transit and civil rights.

Twelve entries will be selected, four from each grade category: 3rd through 6th, 7th through 9th, and 10th through 12th. Winners will receive a $25 bookstore gift card and "The Rosa Parks Story" DVD.

RT will display the winning works of art and poetry on RT interior transit cards in buses from January 1 through February 28, 2014, to commemorate RT's Season of Civil Rights. Winning entries will also be on display at special events during the three-month campaign.

Submissions must be received by Friday, December 6, 2013. Mail or deliver to:

Sacramento Regional Transit District, Attn: Season of Civil Rights Art and Poetry Contest, 1400 29th Street, Sacramento, CA 95816.

All entries must be original work, and include student's name, grade, school, teacher and contact information. All contest entries received become the property of RT, which reserves the exclusive, unrestricted right for the use, reproduction and publication of the content of such entries.
