Take Me Home Safely Program

Across the Sacramento Valley, law enforcement agencies respond to situations in which people with special needs are missing or are found but unable to communicate information about their needs.
An existing photo-based information system hosted by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department and currently used by all police agencies throughout the Sacramento region, has been adapted to include information about people with special needs.  This special program is called Take Me Home Safely.  The information it contains is based on a voluntary enrollment by the person’s caregiver through a supporting organization.
The Alta California Regional Center (ACRC) is one of these supporting organizations.  ACRC assists persons with disabilities, including infants at risk, and their families who live in Sacramento, Yolo, Colusa, Sutter, Yuba, Sierra, Nevada, Placer, El Dorado and Alpine counties.   Registering for the Take Me Home Safely program requires submitting information and a photograph or picture file to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department through the ACRC or responsible caregiver.

In This Election Year, You Can Campaign for Literacy

Did you know that literacy is a major predictor of a student’s future academic success?  Here are some startling statistics about literacy:
·        Eighty-five percent of youth in the juvenile justice system and 60% of all prison inmates are functionally illiterate.
·        In Sacramento only 37% of third graders read at grade level.  And 74% of those students who are behind in third grade will never catch up.
To raise literacy levels in our community, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson launched the Sacramento READS! Third Grade Literacy Campaign.  This effort will work to ensure that more children are reading at grade level, attending school on a daily basis, and having quality summer learning options to help them get caught up.
How can you help?  Be a volunteer, donate to the campaign, or become a business sponsor for one of the local partner schools.  Visit http://www.sacramentoreads.com for more information.
