Be a Sleep Train Secret Santa

Sleep Train believes all children should be able to experience the joy and excitement of the holidays. But for California foster children who have been separated from family, friends and familiar faces, the holidays can be a lonely and difficult time.

The good news is that we can help! Something as simple as a special gift that shows someone cares can make a world of difference.

Now through Sunday, December 14, 2014, bring your donation of new and unwrapped toys, books, games, movies and more to a Sleep Train location near you, including their store at Florin Towne Centre, 6001 Florin Rd, Ste D-1, Sacramento.

Store Hours:
Monday through Friday: 10 am to 8 pm
Saturday: 10 am to 8 pm
Sunday: 10 am to 7 pm

Phone: 916-399-0737

Or you can donate online today at https://www.sleeptrainfosterkids.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donate.general and the shopping will be done on your behalf.

"I Am the Dream and the Dream Is Now"

The Sacramento Regional Transit District (RT) is celebrating its 7th annual Season of Civil Rights with a series of events during the months of December, January and February to build awareness about the significant role that transit played in the American Civil Rights Movement.

In preparation, RT invites students in grades 3 through 12, who attend a school within RT's service area, to participate in the "I Am the Dream and the Dream Is Now" art and poetry contest.

The contest allows students to creatively express their ideas about the relationship between transit and civil rights either through art or writing. Original drawings must be submitted in landscape orientation on 8.5" high x 11" wide paper. Entries should not be created in pencil or include the use of unlicensed images taken from the Internet or print materials. Poems must be 10 lines or less and be original work and type written. All entries are required to relate to both the theme of transit and civil rights.

Twelve entries will be selected, four from each grade category: 3rd through 6th, 7th through 9th, and 10th through 12th. Winners will receive a $25 bookstore gift card and "The Rosa Parks Story" DVD.

RT will display the winning works of art and poetry on RT interior transit cards in buses in January and February 2015, to commemorate RT's Season of Civil Rights. Winning entries will also be on display at special events during the three-month campaign.

Submissions must be received by Friday, December 12, 2014. To submit original artwork or poems, please mail or deliver to:

Sacramento Regional Transit District
Attn: Season of Civil Rights Art and Poetry Contest
1225 R Street
Sacramento, CA 95811

All entries must be original work, and include student's name, grade, school, teacher and contact information. All contest entries received become the property of RT, which reserves the exclusive, unrestricted right for the use, reproduction and publication of the content of such entries.

For more information, contact Brittany Dobbs, RT Marketing and Communications Specialist, at 916-556-0125 or bdobbs@sacrt.com.

And A Good Time Was Had By All!

Two hundred-thirty guests attended our 12th Annual Beach Blanket Bingo fundraiser on September 25, 2014. This event was once again graciously hosted by Florin Road Bingo. They generously donated the venue, hand-made decorations, non-alcoholic beverages, and staff time. Their support year after year helps make this event a success.

We were fortunate to have Hannibal's Catering and Events as well as The Bolt Bar return to provide delicious food and drinks.

Our many generous donors and sponsors contributed over $3,400 in prizes for our bingo games and raffles.

Local elected officials and their staff members also participated in the event. Many thanks to Larry Carr, SMUD Board of Directors - Ward 6; Jimmie Yee, Sacramento County Board of Supervisors - District 2; and Bonnie Pannell, former councilmember for Sacramento City Council - District 8.

A special thank you goes to Parkway Estates North Neighborhood Association (PENNA) for purchasing the most individual admission tickets. We are grateful for their continued support.

We also greatly appreciate the support of the Florin Historical Society, who joined us this year with both a table sponsorhip and a display sponsorship.

Net proceeds from this event go directly to our annual college scholarship program for graduating seniors of Luther Burbank High School, Sacramento. The fundraiser also helps provide grants to numerous schools and non-profits in the Florin Road community.
